The International Language Classes

The International Language Classes Haarlemmermeer provide children from 4 to 13 years of age with a flying start in the Netherlands. After about a year, our pupils have mastered the Dutch language sufficiently to move on to a primary or secondary school in their neighbourhood. This is how we do it.

Quickly familiar
Children who start with us do not speak Dutch yet. That is quite a challenge. Our team is familiar with the different cultures and customs. We ensure that a child quickly feels safe and at home at school. Only then is a child able to develop. The language classes are divided by age. Each class consists of around fifteen pupils and has a full-time teacher and teaching assistant. Our enthusiastic staff give individual attention to the pupils. All pupils have their own learning line, so that the education meets the needs of the child.

Kindergarten language class
Sometimes our partners in the childcare centre, playgroup or primary school notice that a child has difficulty with Dutch as a second language. In that case, the child can be referred to our kindergarten language class. Registration for children who already live in Haarlemmermeer goes through the Central Coordination Point (CCP). Besides a language deficiency, the children in this class may also have other issues. We pay attention to school skills and social-emotional development, so that these children can also move on to regular education.

Our education
Our focus is on increasing the Dutch vocabulary. In this way, we prepare the children for regular education. Children age 6 and up get classes in reading, writing and arithmetic. In arithmetic we pay attention to the language of arithmetic and story sums. We offer education on an individual level, which is why we work with level groups. A teacher gives the instruction and a teaching assistant supports in processing the material. In the language classes we use digital programmes to practise. The children can also use these programmes at home. There are also lessons in social-emotional skills, physical education, handicrafts, music and drawing.

Parent contact
For each child, the teacher, together with the internal supervisor, draws up an individual development plan (IDP) with individual goals. Four weeks after the start, we invite parents for an introductory meeting with the teacher. We discuss the goals and how the start went. After a period of about ten weeks, we plan a test week, followed by a progress meeting. Every month, parents are welcome in the classroom during "Glance into the Classroom". This gives them a good insight into how learning happens in a Dutch school.

Exit
Every child is unique and has his or her own story. Because the backgrounds and levels of the pupils differ, pupils can stay in the language class for more than a year or less than a year. The children's development is closely monitored. After approximately thirty weeks in the language class, we determine when the child can move on to regular education and to which class. Parents then receive an exit letter for the new school. In this letter we ask the new school to contact us for the transfer of the child.

Method
We use the method Wereld Vol Woorden (World full of Words). With concrete materials, practical exercises and word cards on the word wall, the children increase their vocabulary based on a theme. During activities, the children can apply the Dutch words they have learned. For example, by making "vlaflip" - a typical Dutch dessert -, a walk through the neighbourhood or a visit to the children's farm.

IKC Wereldwijs
Besides the language classes, IKC Wereldwijs consists of a regular primary school and after-school care of SKH. Thus, students of the language classes come into contact with Dutch-speaking children. For example, during outdoor play. There are also joint workshops. Children make their own choice from our IKC-wide range of activities, and they can also opt for an activity with their own, familiar teacher. Thus, students integrate at their own pace.

Registration
Children who do not speak Dutch well enough due to migration can be registered, after which an intake interview will follow. During this meeting, we get to know the child better. We explain how everything works and give a tour of the school.

Transport to school
Pupils living further away from the IKC may qualify for transport. Pupils who live further from the IKC may be eligible for transport.
